MATCH REPORT FOR TOTTINGTON V BUDENBERGS 21ST JULY
Game played on even Running Green,
warm conditions
Tottington were the latest team to face the Budenberg steamroller
and a good size crowd turned out to watch this one. High flyers
Budenbergs must have fancied a comfortable win against the lowly
Tottington outfit, but were in for a suprise as the Home Team had
different ideas. Budies got
off to an expected start, Robert Hitchen disposing of Sam Deacon
21-11, already it looked ominous for the Bury outfit, but John
Pearson restored things with an identical 21-11 scoreline over Glynn
Cookson. One game all and level chalks. Lee Lawton then just managed
to pip Jim Derby 21-17, to regain the advantage. With GI Wilson next
to come the odds would be on a 3-1 lead for the Champions, however
Terry Lytham had not read the script and duly proceeded to beat the
great Wilson with a great display of bowling 21-15. Four games off
two games a piece and a 2 chalk advantage to the Home side. The
Champions replied with the next two games, Chris Morrison beating
Paul Atherden 21-14 and Eddie German seeing off Tommy Taylor 21-13
to give Budies a 13 chalk advantage, and a 4-2 lead. The match
looked all but over, but nobody saw the "fat lady" singing
just yet. Ian Turrell came
out in a close encounter with Mike Telford 21-18 and The great man
Brian Duncan posted a 21-13 win against late call up Tommy King. 4-4
and 2 chalks advantage to Budenbergs. Any bookies present would
still have been giving high odds against Totty with Cairns and Mort
last on for the champions. Clive
Chapman saw off the out of sorts Andy Cairns 21-15 and John
Birtwistle making a rare appearance sealed it with a 21-19 win over
Stuart Mort. So there we have
it, a well deserved win for Tottington and proof that sometimes the
Champions do have an Achilles heel, albeit not very often.
